Embroidery vs. Print: How to Choose Your Summer T-Shirt

Every year around this time, we get the same question: “I want a summer T-shirt — should I go with embroidery or print?” This guide skips the fluff and breaks down each process, how they feel on skin, which occasions call for which, and finally, our curated summer-ready tees so you can pick with confidence.
First, the fundamentals: embroidery vs. print — two different worlds
Most people think the difference is just “raised vs. flat,” but from raw material to finished garment, they follow completely separate production lines. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at our actual factory workflow.
Embroidered tee: from photo to stitch — 5 steps
Upload your image
Provide a photo of your pet, family, or partner — higher resolution means more precise stitch detail.
Digitizing (punching)
Our designers convert the image into a stitch path that the embroidery machine reads, defining stitch direction, density, and colour transitions.
Digital proof approval
We send you a digital mock-up for confirmation — free of charge and a non-negotiable step in our process.
Machine embroidery
Industrial embroidery machines stitch directly onto the fabric. A medium-complexity portrait usually takes 20–40 minutes of machine time.
Quality check & trimming
Each piece is manually inspected for loose threads, density consistency, and skipped stitches before packing.

Printed tee: from artwork to ready-to-wear — 3 steps
Artwork layout
Text, illustrations, or abstract graphics are composed digitally at full scale.
Heat transfer / DTG
The design is applied via heat-pressed transfer film or direct-to-garment ink, finished in minutes.
Setting & packaging
Heat setting locks in the colours, then the tee moves straight to packing and shipping.
At-a-glance comparison
| Dimension | Embroidery | Printed |
|---|---|---|
| Handfeel / texture | Raised, distinct stitch texture | Flat against the fabric, almost zero thickness |
| Durability | Resists cracking / fading through many washes | May develop cracks or fade after repeated wash cycles |
| Summer breathability | Stitched areas are less breathable; choose lightweight base fabric | Print area barely affects breathability; overall lighter feel |
| Best for design types | Clear-outline portraits, text, simple graphics | Gradients, complex illustrations, large-surface artwork |
| Price range (our site) | From $24.90 – $36.90 | From $19.90 – $27.90 |
| Turnaround time | 4–7 business days (includes proofing) | 2–4 business days |
| Best occasion | Keepsake gifts, heirloom pieces, long-term wear | Daily commute, group uniforms, seasonal rotation |
Why “lightweight” matters more than you think for summer embroidery
Here’s what many overlook: embroidery itself isn’t the issue — it’s the base fabric. Heavy fleece sweatshirts are warm and cosy in winter, but they’re stifling in summer. Our summer recommendation: keep the embroidery craftsmanship, but switch to a lightweight cotton T-shirt base. You get the premium stitch texture without the sweaty discomfort.
Summer embroidery advantage
100% cotton jersey, breathable and moisture-wicking. Stitch concentration is kept small (chest, cuffs) so it never feels heavy or trapped.
Summer print advantage
Lightest overall weight, print adds almost zero bulk. Ideal for frequent washing, travel tees, or group activities.

Will an embroidered tee feel stuffy in summer?
As long as the base is a lightweight cotton jersey and the stitch area is kept small (chest, cuffs), breathability is nearly identical to a plain tee. The real culprit for heat is heavy fleece — not the embroidery itself.
How long before a printed tee cracks or fades?
It depends on the technique and washing. Heat-transfer films may show fine cracks or colour loss after 1–2 years of machine washing and high heat. We recommend cold, gentle wash inside-out and air-dry to extend life.
Can I combine both embroidery and print on one garment?
Absolutely. Many customers use embroidery for the main focal point (portrait/name) and print for background patterns or large colour blocks. Just add a note when ordering.
How much longer does embroidery take than print?
Embroidery usually takes 4–7 business days (including proofing); print takes 2–4 business days. If you’re in a hurry, choose print or contact us for expedited options.
What customisation is available for the tee version?
Portraits, pet photos, names/dates, cartoon styles, and line-art are all supported. Specific options depend on the product page — some styles are limited to certain collections.
